Wallpaper Brands & Materials: An Installation Guide for DC, Maryland & Virginia
The right installation plan starts with the exact wallcovering, not simply the brand name. Use this guide to prepare a wallpaper project brief, compare material considerations and discuss your selection with Shotcount before ordering or setting an installation date.
Planning by wallpaper brand
Fromental wallcoverings
For a Fromental selection, identify whether the order is a printed roll or a bespoke wallcovering. Fromental provides separate guidance for printed products and directs customers to its sales team for product-specific installation information. Send the relevant guide, panel layout and exact finish with your brief; instructions for one construction should not be assumed to apply to another.

Romo wallcoverings
Include the Romo collection, design reference, colorway and the hanging instructions supplied with your order. A photograph can communicate the look you want, but it cannot establish the backing, adhesive requirements or usable roll yield. Review these specifications before confirming quantities and preparation.
Phillip Jeffries wallcoverings
Phillip Jeffries publishes product-specific hanging instructions. Identify the exact item and review its instructions rather than treating every textured or natural wallcovering alike. Inspect the received material before cutting and hanging, and resolve product questions with the supplier before work proceeds.

Manufacturer references are planning resources, not claims of dealership, certification or manufacturer endorsement. Send another brand or product for a project-specific review.
Material questions to resolve before installation
- Printed patterns: confirm repeat, match, direction and the desired focal point. Doors, windows and corners affect layout and ordering.
- Grasscloth and other natural textures: discuss the expected panel-to-panel appearance using the actual sample and manufacturer’s guidance. A textured look in a photograph does not identify the material.
- Textile, silk and delicate finishes: confirm handling, cleaning and adhesive requirements for the exact product before the scope is agreed.
- Custom murals and scenic panels: provide the wall elevation, panel sequence, artwork scale and trim allowances. Identify features that must remain visible after trimming.
- Bathroom and high-use spaces: check the product’s suitability for the room, expected moisture exposure and maintenance needs with the manufacturer.
Installation considerations by material
Grasscloth and natural wallcoverings
Start with the actual sample: natural fibers can vary in shade and texture between panels. Discuss the expected seams and paneling before ordering. A dining room, study or bedroom may suit the look, but the product’s moisture and care requirements must suit the room. Confirm adhesive, handling and layout from the exact hanging instructions.
Vinyl wallcoverings
Vinyl includes different backings and performance specifications. For a hallway, busy room or commercial space, compare the product’s cleaning instructions and intended use rather than relying on the word vinyl alone. Confirm substrate preparation, adhesive and seam method. Vinyl is not a remedy for a damp wall.
Fabric, silk and textile wallcoverings
These finishes call for product-specific handling and layout planning. Discuss how seams, lighting and the weave will appear in the room, and review the cleaning limitations before selecting a finish for a high-contact area. Provide the supplier’s instructions before the installation scope is finalized.
Murals and scenic panels
Plan the artwork against an elevation showing doors, windows, corners and furniture. Confirm panel order, finished dimensions and trim allowance before production. A focal feature should not accidentally land behind a door or be trimmed from the edge. Our mural and designer wallpaper installation service supports this planning.
Use project photographs to discuss layout
Our original Bethesda reading-nook photographs illustrate a compact room’s visual goals; the Arlington powder-room project illustrates pattern placement around fixtures. These are room and layout references, not verification of a particular material or manufacturer.

Connect your selection to a room
Explore our before-and-after project gallery for dining rooms, reading nooks, powder rooms and feature walls. These examples help explain visual goals and room layouts; confirm the product specification separately before ordering.
- Chevy Chase dining room: consider how a floral composition relates to furniture and trim.
- Bethesda reading nook: consider texture, lighting and a compact wall area.
- Arlington powder room: plan a bold pattern around fixtures and tight corners.
Send these details for a useful installation discussion
Provide your city and ZIP code, room photographs, approximate wall dimensions, existing wall finish, manufacturer and product number, colorway, roll or panel size, pattern repeat, hanging instructions and preferred timing. Include any deadline, building access rules or other trades working in the room. Final quantities and preparation should be reviewed against the actual product and site.
Frequently asked questions
Can I order wallpaper based on room square footage?
Square footage alone does not account for pattern matching, panel layouts, trimming and the dimensions of individual walls. Share the room measurements and product specification before confirming an order.
Can you identify an exact wallpaper from a project photograph?
A photograph is useful inspiration, but verify the manufacturer, design number and colorway against a sample or order record. Similar-looking designs may require different installation methods.
What if my designer is based outside the Washington area?
Use our Trade Partnership Program to discuss drawings, on-site contacts and layout approvals for a local project.
