SHOTCOUNT · CARE AFTER INSTALLATION
Wallpaper aftercare & workmanship support
Care for your new wallcovering starts with the instructions for the exact material installed. This guide helps Shotcount customers in Washington, DC, Maryland and Virginia know what to keep, how to approach cleaning and how to contact us about a concern.
During the initial drying period
Follow the installer’s guidance and the wallcovering and adhesive manufacturers’ instructions for room conditions, ventilation and drying time. Avoid touching seams, attaching tape, hanging items against the surface or attempting repairs while the installation settles. Do not use direct heat to accelerate drying.
Care depends on the wallcovering
| Material or finish | Before cleaning |
|---|---|
| Grasscloth and natural fibers | Do not assume the surface is washable. Water or cleaners can stain or alter natural fibers and dyes. Follow the exact product’s dry-cleaning or dust-removal instructions. |
| Textile, silk, flock and delicate finishes | Avoid rubbing, scrubbing or wet cleaning unless the manufacturer expressly permits it. Ask about a suitable gentle dust-removal method for that finish. |
| Vinyl and other washable wallcoverings | Check the product’s cleaning classification and approved method. “Washable” does not mean every chemical, abrasive or amount of water is suitable. |
| Printed papers and custom murals | Confirm the care instructions for the printed surface and protective finish. A method suitable for one mural may damage another. |
When in doubt, pause and ask before applying a cleaning product. See the Phillip Jeffries product instructions and the Wallcovering Installers Association care resource. The instructions for your specific product take priority over general advice.
Keep your project records
- Product name, pattern number, manufacturer and batch or dye-lot labels.
- Your written proposal, agreement, invoice and installation date.
- Any remaining material, stored as the manufacturer recommends.
- Care and hanging instructions supplied with the product.
Questions about workmanship or warranty?
Contact Shotcount if you notice an issue or have a question about the completed installation. Your written Shotcount agreement is the reference for any warranty duration, coverage, exclusions and available remedy. This general guide does not create or change warranty terms. If you cannot locate your agreement, ask us for a copy or clarification.
What to send us
- Your name, installation date and project reference, if available.
- The room and location of the concern, and when you first noticed it.
- One photograph showing the overall wall and a close-up of the affected area.
- The product details and any relevant change, such as moisture, a leak, impact or recent cleaning.
Please do not peel back seams, add adhesive, paint over the area or discard remaining material before discussing the concern. Surface conditions, moisture, material behavior and installation details may all need to be assessed before the cause and appropriate next steps can be determined.

Common aftercare questions
Can I clean every wallpaper with a damp cloth?
No. Some natural, textile and decorative surfaces are not washable. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for the exact product before cleaning.
Does a visible seam always mean faulty installation?
No. Some materials have intentionally visible paneling or natural variation. An unexpected opening, lifting edge or other change should be photographed and discussed with the installer rather than diagnosed from appearance alone.
Can you assess an older or damaged installation?
Describe the issue and share photographs through our contact page. See our wallpaper repair service for repair planning; suitability depends on the material, damage and available matching stock.
