SHOTCOUNT · SURFACE PREPARATION
Can wallpaper be installed over textured walls?
Usually, the surface needs assessment and preparation first. Wallpaper follows the surface beneath it; a thick or busy pattern should not be treated as a substitute for a suitable wall. The exact wallcovering instructions determine what is acceptable.
Three questions before choosing a method
- What is the texture? Send an overall photograph and a close-up in side lighting. Small paint stipple and a pronounced decorative finish present different planning questions.
- Is the surface sound? Loose paint, cracks, damaged drywall and moisture need assessment before covering the wall.
- Which wallpaper? Share the manufacturer, product number, backing and hanging instructions. Self-adhesive and pasted products can have different surface requirements.
Does peel-and-stick work on texture?
Do not assume it will. York’s peel-and-stick instructions specify smooth surfaces and say the product will not adhere to textured surfaces. Check the exact product rather than transferring advice from another brand or construction. A sample test should follow the manufacturer’s directions; it does not replace required wall preparation.
What preparation might be included?
An assessment may lead to localized repairs or a broader smoothing and preparation scope. Ask your installer to identify the proposed surface treatment, primer compatibility and any drying requirements before installation is scheduled. The objective is a stable, suitable surface—not simply hiding bumps under paper.
Our wall preparation service can be discussed alongside your wallpaper installation. Preparation requirements affect both the scope and the schedule.
What should I send for a quote?
Include each wall, close-ups of texture or damage, wall dimensions, the chosen product and any known surface history. State whether the room was recently painted or repaired. The installation cost guide explains other quote factors.
