SHOTCOUNT · CHOOSING YOUR WALLCOVERING
Grasscloth versus vinyl wallpaper: which suits your room?
Start with how the room is used and the appearance you want. Natural grasscloth and vinyl can both offer texture, but similar photographs do not mean similar construction, maintenance or installation requirements. Compare physical samples and the specifications of the exact products.
Choose the appearance deliberately
Natural grasscloth may have visible paneling and variations in fiber, color and weave. Discuss these characteristics with the supplier and installer before ordering. If you want a more uniform appearance, ask to see alternatives and installed examples of the actual product.
Some vinyl products reproduce a woven or grasscloth look. Phillip Jeffries’ Vinyl Hemps & Grasses collection is one example. A textured appearance alone therefore does not tell you whether a wallcovering contains natural grass fibers.
Compare the room’s demands
- Dining rooms and studies: compare the texture under your room’s lighting and consider where chairs or furniture may touch the wall.
- Hallways and busy spaces: check cleaning instructions and the intended use of the product. Ask about routine contact and maintenance before choosing.
- Bathrooms and kitchens: confirm suitability for the specific moisture exposure and ventilation. Neither a material name nor a decorative image establishes suitability for a wet area.
- Commercial rooms: provide project specifications so the wallcovering’s documented performance can be checked against the requirements.
Cleaning is product-specific
Do not assume natural grasscloth can be wiped with water, or that every vinyl tolerates the same cleaner. Request the care instructions before purchase. Our aftercare guide explains why the finish and manufacturer’s instructions matter.
What changes for installation?
Confirm the backing, adhesive, seam treatment and hanging direction for the selected product. Discuss expected panel appearance and layout before cutting material. Both choices need a suitable substrate; a textured finish is not a solution for an unsound or damp wall.
Send samples or product links when discussing residential installation or commercial wallcovering installation. Compare preparation and installation scope as well as the purchase price.
A useful selection checklist
Ask for the product reference, physical sample, hanging instructions, care instructions and any performance documentation relevant to your room. Use our original local project gallery to discuss visual goals; verify each proposed material separately.
