SHOTCOUNT · REMOVAL & WALL PREPARATION
Will walls need repairs after wallpaper removal?
Sometimes. The answer depends on the existing wall, previous preparation, wallpaper construction and adhesive—not just the room size. Removal reveals the surface that must support the next finish. Agree on how unexpected conditions will be assessed before the work begins.
What affects the condition underneath?
- Original preparation: the surface treatment before the old paper was installed can affect removal.
- Wall construction and condition: damaged drywall facing, loose areas and previous patches may need attention.
- Layers and coatings: multiple coverings or painted-over wallpaper can complicate the removal plan.
- Existing moisture or damage: stains, recurring dampness and loose surfaces require assessment before they are covered.
- The next finish: the preparation scope must suit the intended wallpaper or painted finish.
Why an assessment matters
A preliminary removal assessment helps clarify what is coming away and what remains. The Wallcovering Installers Association notes that some wallpapers require specialist methods and that scoring tools can damage drywall. A quote should allow for a discussion of concealed conditions rather than promise that every wall will be ready immediately after stripping.
Possible preparation after removal
Depending on the revealed condition, the scope may include dealing with remaining adhesive, localized repairs, smoothing and a compatible primer system. Ask what is included, what would require additional approval and how drying affects the installation date. WIA’s preparation guidance discusses repairing drywall imperfections and appropriate priming.

What to send before requesting a quote
Share overall room photographs, close-ups of loose edges or damaged areas, approximate wall dimensions and the intended new finish. Mention any known layers, previous repairs or moisture history. Photographs help with initial planning, but they cannot reveal every concealed surface condition.
Can you guarantee no repairs will be needed?
The hidden substrate cannot be fully assessed from a finished-wall photograph. Clarify the initial scope and the approval process for additional preparation in the written proposal.
Does removal include painting?
Do not assume it does. Ask what final surface condition is included and who will carry out the next finish. Coordinate responsibilities and timing before work begins.
